GARDEN MAINTENANCE GREEN POINT
"When is the best time to transplant my plants?"
A general rule of thumb is to transplant any plant when it is not seeding or flowering, but most flowering plants flower in summer which means most plants prefer to be transplanted in winter where there are cooler and wetter conditions.

"Which product is best for fertilizing my garden i.e. beds and lawn?"
If you would prefer to stay organic on your garden I would recommend all Nutrog products like Bounce Back for general fertilizing or you could use 7.1.3 or 2.3.2 for lawn and bed applications.

"How often should I water and when?"
It is always best to water your garden in the morning to ensure maximum replenishment to replace the moisture that the heat of the sun removes during the course of the day. The quantity is dependent on how established the garden is i.e. more water for less established gardens and visa versa.

"How often should I mow my lawn?"
Fast growing and very healthy lawns need to be moved once a week in summer. In winter this can be trimmed down to once every two to three weeks, depending on the growth.

"Which grass grows best in shade areas?"
There is no such thing as a shade lawn as all lawns need sunlight, however L.M.Berea and Buffalo Lawn are more shade tolerant, but a much harder and more difficult lawn to grow successfully.

"Which are the best plants to plant to ensure I have a water wise garden?"
Try and stick to indigenous plants, these will reward you with massive amounts of flowers as well as birds, bees and butterflies. Plants which are found in nature in close proximity to where you live will naturally thrive better in your garden.

"Which insecticides are the best to use for herbs and vegetable patches?"
Any organic fertilizers and insecticides available at your local nursery which are safe for human consumption once applied to the plant will ensure you are able to eat and use everything you “harvest”.

"Is it possible to have my irrigation stay off when it rains without me having to manually turn it off?"
Yes, we install only the best controllers which can be fitted with rain sensors. Ensuring you save money on water when it's raining as well as not wasting water.

"Which is the best way to keep my dogs out of the garden beds?"
If dogs are always going to be a part of your life and therefore your garden you can plant species of plants which are distasteful to the dogs which will discourage digging and chewing. Other alternatives are river boulders in your problems areas in your garden beds as well as surrounding groups of plants, not using products like bone meal or any other organic product containing chicken manure.

"When is the best time to plant new trees and or plants?"
Like with transplanting the best time to establish new plants are in the wetter colder months like winter and autumn. This gives root systems a good start to ensure that budding and flowering are well supported in spring and summer. Planting annuals however can be done right the way through the year to ensure you have additional colour.

"How do I ensure all my plants become well established?"
Regular fertilizing and composting of your beds will ensure healthy plant growth as well as sufficient water.

"Which plants or trees should I not plant / have removed if I have a pool?"
There are many varieties of shrubs and trees which have massive root systems. These will cause problems with your piping as well as the structural integrity of your swimming pool. Some of those varieties include; All Ficus varieties, Cussonia Spicata, Yucca's and some Syzigium varieties as they are water loving and their roots will seek water. With regards to leaves dropping in your pool, the following varieties to avoid are: All deciduous tree varieties as they all lose their leaves in winter.

"Can I put compost on my lawn to make it green?"
No, as compost is a rotting material and will rot the top leaves of your lawn only producing temporary greening as the lawn is recovering from being burnt, but not in turn improving it at all. The best way to feed your lawn is to use a good fertilizer as well as a thin layer of lawn dressing which is comprised of fine milled compost mixed with river sand and never applied thicker than the blades of grass. This should all be followed by plenty of water to ensure fast and healthy growth.

"Why does my lawn have brown patches and / my feet sink in when I walk on it?"
Depending on the time of year it could be that your lawn is riddled with a pest known as “lawn cricket” or  possibly a fungus which is easily treatable with the correct fungicide and insecticide.

"When is the best time to prune my roses?"
The best time usually is right after winter say July/ August, yet pruning naked under the full moon seems to be a new craze, so what the hell, let's try it!
